Dreaming in Coffee Shops

It seems to me that most girls in their late teens to early twenties around me right now love hanging out in coffee shops with friends. We all love dreaming big dreams, enjoying the atmosphere around us and the coffee shop music that wafts across the room. And let us not forget the latte or mocha that is sometimes our lifeline.

From where I sit today, I hear a student practicing her fiddle, making the song perfect, tweaking the wrong notes, making the song exactly what it's supposed to be. I hear the baristas joking between rushes, cleaning up behind the counter, getting ready for the next flood of customers. I hear friends dreaming together with a passionate, "Let's do it."

I love sitting here quietly observing those around me.

I love hearing the dreams being born or taking flight. I love paying attention to the people studying or doing homework, working for the good grade (whether they want to be taking the class or just need the credit). I love the smiles when people walk through the door.

It makes me hope for something more. It makes me want to strive for something better. It helps me remember that where I am is not forever. When I sit here, longing for a friend to dream with and seek something more, it is not where I am going to be forever. Sitting here makes me hope for more. Be discontent with where I am. It makes me seek more. It makes me want to worship in confidence. It makes me want to dance like no one is looking and it makes me want to sing like no one can hear. It makes me want to never even think about giving up on my dreams because there is no reason my dreams can't come true. If my God is for me, who can stand against?

Today, stand firm that wherever you are, He is greater. Higher than the highest and deeper than the lowest. Best of all, He is constant. He will not forsake me when I don't have a best friend to dream big dreams with. He won't forsake me when I get married and say "I do" to the man I'll spend the rest of my life with. Identity is found in Christ alone. Forever I will stand in that confidence. Through it all, He is constant.
